His teachers met his comments with criticism, not because they lacked intellectual value, but because it made them wonder about the empty and routine life they had accepted without question.
This exchange marks the climax of rebellion for the trio. We first see Judy in a red coat with red lipstick at the beginning of the film, and later Jim dons his iconic red windbreaker. Yet, what he gets is not a father giving him guidance and support, but someone who tries to please his son and agrees with everything he says. Plato tries warning Jim about the gang's ambush, and suggests they go to a nearby abandoned mansion, but Buzz and the rest of the gang slash Jim's tires so he cannot leave the planetarium.
Meanwhile, the gang roves the town looking for Jim, first intimidating Plato who grabs a gun from his parents' nightstand , and then Jim's parents, out of concern that he plans to turn them into the police. Judy, who expresses her adoration for her father through unsubtle sexual gestures, rebels by cavorting with the wildest clique at school. Finally, Ponyboy is very honest. At one point in the scene he is brought into another room with an officer, and begins to punch a desk. Jim is enraged by his father's behavior towards his mother because he believes that he is diminishing himself as a man by being subservient to her.
